More about our panelists:

IWe are glad to invite: Lore Baeten, Nisrine Mbarki and Jurgen Maas, to discuss topics about connections, translations. and publishing, between Arab and Dutch literature in Belgium, disporas, and the Arab World.

The Panel discussion will be accompanied by a musical performance by Damast Duo

Nisrine Mbarki is a versatile writer, poet, columnist, translator and program maker. She is a program maker for Winternachten, a member of the editorial staff of Poeziekrant, a jury member of the Grote Poezieprijs and the Jan Campert Prize. She writes poetry, theater texts and short stories. As a literary translator she translates poetry from Arabic into Dutch. She has five translations to her name. Her poems and columns regularly appear in literary magazines such as De Gids, Poëziekrant , De Revisor , Tirade and Het Liegend Konijn. Mbarki has previously performed at festivals such as Poetry International, Globale in Bremen, Winternachten, Read My World, Felix Poetry Festival in Antwerp and the Night of Poetry.

Jurgen Maas: is the founder of Publishing House Jurgen Maas (Amsterdam). The publishing house focuses on Dutch and translated literature (prose and poetry) and literary and journalistic non-fiction, with a special focus on the Middle East, North Africa, and the multicultural society. Jurgen Maas studied journalism and political science. He worked for almost fifteen years at IKON as a radio producer and presenter.

Lore Baeten: is a visiting language professor for Arabic at the College of Europe. She is specialized in the Middle-East and holds a Masters degree in Eastern Languages and Civilizations from Ghent University. She continued studying at INALCO in Paris (FR), DEAC in Cairo (EG) and IFPO in Damascus (SY), where she lived and worked for 4 years. She teaches Arabic linguistics at the Faculty of Arts of KU Leuven University, Belgium. She also works as translator and is a board member of Moussem Nomadic Arts Center, and Lagrange Points

Damast Duo: Syrian violinist Shalan Alhamwy and Belgian accordionist Jonas Malfliet bring together a wide repertoire of Arabic and European folk music along with their own originals. The name "Damast Duo" is inspired by the luxurious textile damask (in Dutch “damast) from Damascus, the Syrian capital. Damask spread all over the world through the trade along the silk road. This cultural crossover between East and West is what outlines Damast Duo’s music. In 2018 the duo recorded their first album “Safar”, a musical journey between Syria and Belgium. In 2019 the collaboration with Danish/Turkish singer Luna Ersahin and French/Venezuelan guitarist Ray Riveros gave birth to the album “Birds of Passage”
